What a general bill of sale should include

A description specific enough to identify the item (brand, model, serial number, color)
Condition
Price and how it was paid
Date and both signatures

After you both sign

Make two copies. Each side keeps a signed original or copy.
Seller: keep your copy with your records for at least three years.
Buyer: keep the bill of sale as your proof of ownership.

Questions people ask

Is a handwritten bill of sale valid?

Yes. A bill of sale is valid if it clearly identifies the parties, the item, the price and the date, and is signed. Typed or handwritten makes no legal difference.

Do I need one for a small sale?

For low-value items it is optional, but it is cheap insurance for anything expensive, anything with a serial number, or any sale to a stranger.
