Does a Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?
Usually not. A bill of sale is valid once it's signed. 2 states require a notarized bill of sale in some vehicle sales, and 7 more require notarized signatures on the title.
States that require a notarized bill of sale
- Louisiana: The bill of sale (act of sale) must be notarized for the OMV to accept it.
- Maryland: A notarized bill of sale is required when the vehicle is less than 7 model years old and sells for $500 or more below book value.
States that require a notarized title
- Kentucky: Seller and buyer signatures on the title assignment must be notarized.
- Montana: The seller's signature on the title must be notarized.
- North Carolina: Signatures on the title assignment must be notarized.
- Ohio: The seller's signature on the title must be notarized.
- Oklahoma: The seller's signature on the title must be notarized.
- Pennsylvania: Title transfers are completed in front of a notary or authorized agent.
- West Virginia: The seller's signature on the title must be notarized.
Some states also require notarization for boats, for vehicles without a title, or for affidavits that go with a gift or inheritance. When in doubt, notarize: it costs little and makes the document nearly impossible to dispute.

Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?

Can a bill of sale be notarized online?
Most states now allow remote online notarization (RON) through approved platforms. Check that your motor vehicle office accepts remotely notarized documents first.
