What it does

Full legal names and addresses identify exactly who gave up ownership and who took it. Without them, the document can't prove the buyer is the person now registering the vehicle.

What goes wrong without it

A first name or a nickname. The DMV clerk can't match it to an ID and may reject the paperwork.

Bill of sale vs. title

For cars, motorcycles, most boats and many trailers, the certificate of title transfers ownership. The seller signs it over, the buyer takes it to the motor vehicle office. The bill of sale is the supporting record: the price (for sales tax), the date (for liability), the condition terms and the mileage.

For things without a title – furniture, equipment, animals, golf carts, many ATVs and older vehicles in some states – the bill of sale is the proof of ownership. That's why it pays to fill it in carefully.

What is a bill of sale?

A bill of sale is a written receipt for the sale of personal property. It records who sold what to whom, when, and for how much. For vehicles and boats it sits alongside the title as proof of the transfer and of the price that sales tax is based on.

Is this bill of sale free?

Is a bill of sale legally binding?

Yes, once it clearly identifies the parties, the item, the price and the date and is signed. It is a contract of sale. It does not replace the certificate of title for titled vehicles and boats.

Does a bill of sale have to be notarized?

Usually not. Louisiana requires a notarized bill of sale, Maryland does in some cases, and several states (such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and North Carolina) require notarized title signatures. The generator adds a notary block when you pick those states.

Will the DMV accept this form?

Motor vehicle offices accept any bill of sale that contains the required details: names, addresses, vehicle description with VIN, price, date, odometer reading where required and signatures. Where a state publishes its own form, we name it on the state page.

Can I write a bill of sale by hand?

Yes. A handwritten bill of sale is just as valid as a printed one if it contains the same information. Use the blank template if you would rather fill it in with a pen.
